Green & White Dinner 2007

We had a great start to 2007 with 300 people attending the annual Green & White Dinner in the Conrad Hotel. Current parents, teaching staff, past pupils (some now also current parents) and guests all had a wonderful evening.

Our guest speaker was Fr Peter McVerry of The Peter McVerry Trust which provides support to homeless boys. Through their centre, the Trust provides accommodation, education, detox programs and aftercare services. It aims to give young boys the necessary life skills to live independently.
Fr. McVerry spoke openly about the sadness of attending funerals each month of young boys who had lost their lives through drugs. He talked about those boys who had come along to the centre and eventually lost contact with him. But he also spoke of the joy of meeting others years later and seeing how they had turned their lives around.

The 2007 ‘Social Justice Award’ went to Dick Lavelle who’s dedication and hard word for the Peter McVerry Trust (see below) is inspirational. Dick, a past pupil, helps to raise some €600,000 annually for the Trust. It was the Union’s honour to present him with the award.
Three current students also received awards - Donal O’Cofaigh as Captain of the SCT Rugby Team, Barry Walsh for representing Ireland at Water Polo and Conor McAndrew who represented Ireland
at The World Schools Debating.

Our resident ‘Podge & Rodge’, Simon Ensor and Mark FitzGerald got the ball rolling with the auction. Hats (by Philip Tracey of course!) paintings, rugby shirts, Lingerie!, nights of passion in the Shelbourne Hotel; there was something for everyone. Our sincere thanks to Mark Fitzgerald and his committee for organising the event and to to all who attended for their generous support. Also to David Davin Power who acted as MC and who’s terrific sense of humour kept us entertained
for the night. By the end of the proceedings, €43,000 had been raised for the Peter McVerry Trust, a truly fantastic result. Congratulations to all involved.
